Commonly Asked Questions

FAQ: FAQ

What does it cost?

My fees are aligned to the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading's suggested minimum rate, which for proofreading is currently £26.90 per hour. As a very rough guide, this equates to 0.9 pence per word. However, each job is different; for example, texts with multiple authors will usually take longer to proofread. My minimum fee is £13.45 (half an hour). I offer a sample proofread for all but very short documents, and this allows me to produce a personalised quotation for your project.

How long does it take?

This is a very difficult question to answer! It depends on the length, complexity, technicality and style of the document, as well as the number of changes that need to be made. It is generally held that a relatively straightforward fiction text can be proofread at 3,000 words per hour, but this is only a guide.

What programs do you use?

I can proofread in most commonly-used software. Most common is Microsoft Word, using tracked changes and comments; and Adobe PDF using mark-up tools. When I use Word, I will send you two versions: one showing all changes and comments, and a clean copy. I can also proofread PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets and even printed documents.

Do you offer an express service?

If I have availability I can offer an immediate service. I do charge a 50% premium for this service. Please get in touch if you have an urgent job and see if I can help.
